How to Make a Slideshow from Google Photos

Learn the practical ways to make a slideshow from Google Photos, when to use a highlight video, and how to create a customized downloadable MP4.

The short answer

You can make a slideshow from Google Photos in two main ways. Google Photos can create a Highlight video from people, places, dates, or media you select. If you want to start with a complete album, retain its order, control slide timing and transitions, add your own music, and download a predictable MP4, you can use a dedicated slideshow editor such as Cloud Photo Show.

First, choose the slideshow workflow you need

Google Photos has its own creation tools. On the web, Highlight videos have replaced the older Movies feature. You can ask Google Photos to build a video around suggested people, places, themes, or dates, or choose media manually. That is a convenient option when you want Google Photos to help assemble memorable moments quickly. Google's current steps are documented in Make creations with Google Photos.

A dedicated editor becomes useful when the album itself is the plan. Perhaps you carefully arranged vacation photos, a memorial sequence, a classroom year in review, or a wedding album and want that exact sequence to become a downloadable video. Cloud Photo Show is designed for that narrower job: import the album, keep its order, make detailed choices, and render an MP4.

Use Google Photos Highlight video when…

  • You want a quick creation around people, dates, places, or themes.
  • You are comfortable working inside Google Photos.
  • Automatic selection is helpful.

Use an album-based editor when…

  • Your existing album order matters.
  • You want detailed timing, titles, transitions, music, or clip controls.
  • You need a finished MP4 file for playback elsewhere.

Prepare a Google Photos album

Review the album before importing it. Remove obvious duplicates, place the opening and closing images where you want them, and check that portrait and landscape photos tell a coherent story. Cloud Photo Show preserves the shared album's order at import, although you can rearrange or randomize slides later.

To use the whole album, open it in Google Photos, choose Share, create or copy its link, and paste that link into Cloud Photo Show. Google explains that anyone with a shared link can view the linked media, so turn link sharing off when you no longer need it. See Google's official photo and album sharing guidance.

Signed-in Cloud Photo Show users can optionally select individual photos through the official Google Photos Picker instead. The Picker lets you choose specific items; it does not give Cloud Photo Show unrestricted access to the whole library. Picker photos are session-only in the current editor, and Picker videos are skipped, so use a shared album for a project you want to reopen later.

Customize the slideshow

  1. Choose included media. Photos begin included. Album videos are clearly marked and begin deselected because preparing them requires more processing.
  2. Check the order. Keep the imported album order, drag slides into place, or use Randomize when sequence is not important.
  3. Add a title. Place it over the first photo or use a separate solid-color title slide. Choose position, font, and colors.
  4. Choose motion and transitions. Use Pan and Zoom for gentle movement, then select no transition, crossfade, fade through black, or fade through white.
  5. Add music. Choose audio files from your device. They stay in the browser rather than being uploaded to Cloud Photo Show.

Choose a useful photo duration

There is no single correct speed. Use the table as a starting point, then preview the complete slideshow. Detailed photos, text, and group portraits generally need more time than simple snapshots.

Slideshow typeSuggested time per photoWhy
Fast recap2–3 secondsKeeps a high-energy sequence moving.
General family or travel show4–5 secondsComfortable for most photos and gentle motion.
Memorial, classroom, or detailed images6–8 secondsLeaves time to recognize people or read visible text.

Cloud Photo Show supports a default time plus individual slide overrides. If you add music, its Fit slideshow to playlist option can adjust default-timed slides while preserving slides you customized individually.

Preview and export the MP4

Play the full preview and watch for awkward crops, slides that pass too quickly, abrupt song changes, or video clips with unwanted original sound. Then choose 720p or 1080p if available under your current access level and device capabilities. Cloud Photo Show creates the MP4 locally in the browser, so keep the tab active and the device awake until rendering finishes.

Download the completed file and play it once before sharing or presenting it. Keep the MP4 somewhere backed up; it is not stored by Cloud Photo Show.
